COMMON FAULTS OF TERMINALS


The plastic insulation materials and conductive parts of the terminal are directly related to the quality of the terminal, which determine the insulation and conductive properties of the terminal. Any terminal failure will lead to the failure of the whole system engineering. From the point of view of application, the function that the terminal should achieve is that the contact parts must be connected and the contact is reliable. The insulation parts that should not be connected must be insulated reliably.


There are three common fatal faults of the terminals.



1. Poor Contact

The metal conductor inside the terminal is the core part of the terminal, which transmits the voltage, current or signal from the external wire or cable to the contact parts corresponding to the mating connector. Therefore, the contact must have excellent structure, stable and reliable contact retention force and good conductivity. Due to unreasonable contact structure design, wrong material selection, unstable mold, over poor processing size, rough surface, unreasonable surface treatment process such as heat treatment and electroplating, improper assembly, poor storage and usage environment, and improper operation, poor contact will be caused at the contact position and matching position of the contact parts.



2. Poor Insulation

The function of the insulator is to keep the contact parts in the correct arrangement and to insulate the contact parts from the contact parts and the outer shell. Therefore, insulating parts must have excellent electrical performance, mechanical performance and process molding performance. Especially with the wide application of high density and miniaturized terminals, the effective wall thickness of insulator becomes thinner and thinner. This puts forward more stringent requirements for insulating materials, injection mold accuracy and molding process.


Due to the presence of metal residues on or inside the insulator surface, surface dust, flux and other pollution and moisture, organic material precipitates and harmful gas adsorption film fused with surface water film to form an ionic conductive channel, moisture absorption, mould growth, aging of insulation materials and other reasons, they will all cause short circuit, leakage, breakdown, low insulation resistance and other undesirable insulation phenomena.



3. Poor Fixation

The insulator not only insulates, but also provides accurate centring and protection for the extended contact parts. At the same time, it also has the function of installation and positioning, locking and fixing tightly on the equipment. Poor fixation has slight impact on reliable contact and severe impact on instant disintegration of products. Due to unreliable design, wrong material selection, improper selection of forming process, poor process quality of heat treatment, mold, assembly, fusion, etc., and improper assembly, they will all cause poor fixation.


In addition, due to coating peeling, corrosion, bruise, plastic shell flash, fracture, rough processing of contact parts, deformation and other reasons, the appearance is bad. Because positioning and locking fit size is out of tolerance, processing quality consistency is poor and the total separation force is too large and other reasons, they lead to poor interchangeability. These are also common and frequent questions. Generally, these faults can be found and eliminated in time during inspection and usage.
